a sock is born is a book for children and those of all ages, exploring the journey of small-scale textile production. many things are not as complicated as industry might have you believe, and the wool sock on your foot is one of them. learn about sheep farming, yarn production, and basic knitting principles, in an inviting format. illustrations and words by emily, using a few stubby charcoal pencils.

emily began sourcing raw fiber from small farmers in 2015 in order to create completely handmade textile work. she’s experienced the story of a sock is born many times, and shared it with curious children + adults in art classes and at farmer’s markets, as well as with unsuspecting friends and strangers sitting next to her at the brewery, and that’s what inspired her to finally write it down.
